Agroforestry in Assam – Phase 2

Region: Jorhat, Assam

A total of 3000 seedless lemon trees were planted on the lands of 15 farmers in Jorhat, Assam.  SankalpTaru Foundation (STF) is thankful to Save Indian Farmers for providing us an opportunity to undertake the Rural Livelihood Support Plantation Program in Jorhat, Assam.

Strategy:

The SankalpTaru team conducted a survey wherein they visited the farmers, identified their problems, inspected their land type, and had a discussion with them regarding the species that they wanted to be planted. When the required species were arranged, the SankalpTaru team carried out the plantations.

 

Objectives:

  • Provide an alternate source of income to the famers.
  • Planting species of fruit-bearing trees to adapt to the changing climate conditions.
  • Reduce the rate of farmers’ suicides because of crop failure.
  • Increase the state’s agricultural economy.

Activities:

  • INITIATION (6 weeks)
    • Beneficiary Identification – completed
    • Land Survey – completed
    • Sapling Procurement – completed
  • PLANTATION DELIVERY (8 weeks)
    • Sapling Plantation – completed
    • Drip Irrigation Installation – completed
  • POST PLANTATION CARE (1 year)
    • Regular maintenance of planted saplings for 1 year – underway
    • Within this 1 year period, farmers will be assisted by our operations team and experts on the know-how on maintenance techniques for the future, such as adequate watering, weeding, mulching, etc. –  underway

Environmental and Social Impact:

  • 1500 tons Carbon Dioxide to be sequestered in a life span
  • 2875 tons Oxygen to be produced in a life span
  • 36 tons of fruits to be produced per season
  • INR 1800000 farmers’ income per season

* The lifespan of a fruit-bearing tree is considered to be 20 years

* After the first mature harvest cycle years, average fruit produced from one tree in one season is taken to be 50 to 60 kg

* Average cost of fruits is taken to be 21-22 Rupees per kg
