Situation Of Farmers at Mahasamund

  • Land holdings are very marginal and landless farmers are more prone to migration.
  • Increased migration to bigger cities (official figure around 2 lakhs, but estimated more than 10 lakhs in reality)
  • Limited irrigation facility despite great river Mahanadi and annual rainfall more than 800 mm
  • High livestock but not effectively used for dairy development, organic manures productions
  • Poor percolation of governmental programmes to the farmer families on account of political, vested interest, illiteracy.

Strategy

There have been many schemes in the past and they were not effective because of the mindset and inhibition towards modern methods. Strategy for training needs to include systematic behavioural interventions amongst the farmers to realize their potential. Training also needs to be supported by in-field methods for improving their productivity and to develop demonstrable models. The approach is multi-dimensional and simultaneous in nature. The strategies planned for the project are broadly listed as follows.

  • Capacity building of the farmers in cultivation and farming along with the related trades that are considered as by-products
